Hwaseong is the wall surrounding the center of Suwon, the provincial capital of Gyeonggi-do, South Korea. It was designated a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site in 1997, the name Hwaseong means “Brilliant Castle”. Hwaseong was created from 1794 to 1796 by King Jeongjo of the Joseon Dynasty to house and honor the remains of his father Prince Sado.
Hwaseong Fortress is a huge place and extends for around 6km, including four gates (Janganmun (north), Paldalmun (south), Changnyongmun (east), and Hwaseomun (west)), some artillery towers, archery turrets and guardhouses along the way. It takes about 3 hours to walk around the fortress past the four gates. Maybe you don’t have enough time to walk for the full circle, but you can get good views and experience from walking just a part. Overlook Suwon city from Hwaseong, is even better than the views from N Seoul Tower.

After walking at Hwaseong wall, don’t miss Hwaseong Haenggung Palace. It is a temporary palace where the king and royal family retreated to during a war. It was the largest and most beautiful Detached Palace at the time of its construction because it had almost 600 rooms and was shaped like the main palace in Seoul. At weekends, there are Jangyongyeong Guard Ceremony and traditional performances at the main gate of Hwaseong Haenggung Palace.
