With South Korea’s highest mountain, beautiful coastline, village and field view, Jeju Island is hikers’ heaven. Hiking is the best way to find the beauty of island. There are many courses from one hour for your choice.
Hallasan National Park [UNESCO World Heritage]
Hallasan is the highest mountain in South Korea, standing up at the center of Jeju Island. The height is 1,950 meters but you can hike up and down in one day if you start early. Also, there are several short hiking trails you can choose from if you have limited time or no enough energy for whole course. No matter which season you go to Hallasan, you will find the fantastic scenery there. If you are fan of Korean show “we get married”, you must remember Khuntoria climbed Hallasan in winter time. Snow covered the mountain and it looks like snow world. Get the top campsite, eat a bowl of ramen noodle to replenish your energy. No matter you conquer the highest peak of South Korea or not, you will enjoy the good view on the way!
Olle Walking Trails
"Olle" was originally used to refer to the narrow path between the street and one’s doorstep in local language. Now, Olle Walking Trails is a series of coastal walking paths on Jeju Island. You can enjoy the beautiful villages, beaches, farms, forests, ocean views on the way. There are 26 routes in total (21 main routes, and five sub-routes). The shortest route costs three hours and the longest up to seven hours. Depending on your time and physical conditions, choose one route if you are hiker. In case tourists get lose, many yellow or blue arrows and ribbons are marked on the way. It is safe and easy to follow the route. Wear comfortable clothes and shoes, take bottle of water, follow the charming coastal walking trails, start your leisurely vacation!
Seongsan Ilchulbong (Sunrise Peak) [UNESCO World Heritage]
Seongsan Ilchulbong is located on the eastern end of Jeju Island, there is a huge crater at the top of Seongsan Ilchulbong Peak. As you might expect from the name, it is the best place to watch sunrise. It is mainly stairs all the way up and takes 50 minutes for return trip. It is not hard hiking course even though for old people. Personally, Seongsan Ilchulbong is my favorite place in Jeju Island. Not only because of the magnificent sunrise view, but if you stand at the top of peak, you will get opening view and look down upon the endless sea. Blue sea and sky, faraway villages, green fields, you will feel all of the gift from nature. In my eyes, it is the best matching colors.
If the weather is good, you can also watch Haenyo Show down the hill at seaside. Haenyo is female diver who dive into the ocean water 20 meters to gather various shellfish, seaweed, without using any underwater diving equipment, and then sell what they get to make money. Most of them are over 60 years old. Young people head for big cities and would like to choose decent job, there is no younger generation to follow their footstep. Haenyo is such a group people who is worthy of respect. They dedicated their youth and work in the cold water, in order to make a living and make their family life better. After decades, maybe there is no Haenyo in Jeju Island. Let’s go to see them this time!
