Kimchi, Korean people can not leave it in daily life. You will find that Kimchi is an essential side dish no matter which Korean restaurant you go. As a synonym for Korea, kimchi equals to Korea, in many foreigners’ eyes.
Kimchi varieties are determined by the main vegetable ingredients and the mix of seasoning used to flavor the kimchi. Cabbage kimchi is normal one, beside it, you can not image there are over 180 varieties of kimchi.
One reason of kimchi well-known by all over the world, is that kimchi-related items have been inscribed on UNESCO's Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by both South and North Korea.
Kimchi making experience is strongly recommended by us if you have enough time in Korea. You can know more about Korean culture by your hands. There are a number of kimchi making programs for foreigners in Seoul. Add half day Korean culture experience into your tour, including kimchi making and hanbok (Korean traditional clothes) wearing experience, you will have fun and take some interesting photos. Additional, visit Korea in October or November to join one of two big kimchi festivals, will be an unforgettable memory for you.
Seoul Kimchi Festival (Nov.4 – 6, 2016)
It is held in the area of Gwanghwamun Square every November. For me, the most memorable moment was many people from different countries were holding kimchi making by their own hands and said “kimchi” for taking photo.
Gwangju Kimchi Festival (Nov.18 – 22, 2016)
It is held in Gwangju (capital city in south part of Korea) every October or Novamber. Visitors can also try creating their own kimchi and cooking dishes such as kimchi tortilla and kimchi jjigae.
